Health, Safety & First Aid Policy

Second Star Youth Theatre is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all participants, staff, volunteers and audience members.

We take reasonable steps to minimise risk and respond effectively to illness, injury or emergency situations.

1. Duty of Care

Second Star Youth Theatre recognises its duty of care to provide a safe environment during all programs, rehearsals and performances.

All staff and volunteers share responsibility for maintaining a safe environment and following safety procedures.

2. Qualified First Aid Personnel

A qualified first aid officer will be present at all programs, rehearsals and performances. A fully stocked first aid kit will be available at all times.

By registering for our programs, parents/guardians consent to staff providing first aid within the scope of their training and contacting emergency services if required. Parents/guardians will be notified as soon as practicable.

3. Medical Information & Health Needs

Parents/guardians are encouraged to provide relevant medical information during registration, including:

  • allergies

  • asthma

  • medical conditions

  • medications

  • emergency contacts

This information enables us to respond appropriately in the event of illness or injury.

If medical information is not provided, our ability to respond effectively may be limited.

4. Medication Management

Parents/guardians must inform us of any medication required during program hours.

In consultation with parents/guardians, participants may either:

  • keep their medication on their person and self-administer as required, or

  • provide medication to staff for safe storage and assistance if needed.

Where relevant:

  • medication should be clearly labelled

  • participants must not share medication

  • emergency medications (such as inhalers or EpiPens) must be readily accessible

  • staff should be informed of emergency medication requirements and action plans where applicable

Participants are responsible for the safe management of medication kept on their person.

Second Star Youth Theatre staff do not administer routine medication but may assist in an emergency situation where necessary.

Parents/guardians should consider the participant’s age, maturity and ability when deciding whether medication is kept by the participant.

5. Illness and Infectious Conditions

To protect the wellbeing of all participants:

  • Participants should not attend if unwell.

  • Participants experiencing fever, vomiting, contagious illness or significant symptoms may be asked to remain at home.

  • Participants who become unwell during a program may be collected by a parent/guardian.

6. Injury and Incident Response

In the event of injury:

  • First aid will be administered as required.

  • Parents/guardians will be notified as soon as practicable.

  • Emergency services will be contacted where necessary.

  • Incidents may be documented for safety and record-keeping purposes.

7. Emergency Procedures

Staff are familiar with venue emergency procedures, including:

  • evacuation routes

  • emergency exits

  • assembly points

  • contacting emergency services

Participants will be guided by staff in the event of an emergency.

8. Safe Participation Expectations

To support a safe environment, participants are expected to:

  • follow staff instructions

  • wear appropriate clothing and footwear

  • behave respectfully toward others

  • use equipment safely

Unsafe behaviour may result in removal from an activity where necessary to protect safety.

9. Venue Safety

Second Star Youth Theatre programs are delivered in hired venues. We take reasonable steps to ensure venues are safe and suitable for activities.

Participants must follow venue rules and safety requirements.

10. Physical Activity and Fatigue

Our programs involve physical activity and extended rehearsal periods.

Participants are encouraged to:

  • bring water and stay hydrated

  • take rest breaks when needed

  • advise staff of pain, injury or discomfort

11. Mental Wellbeing and Emotional Safety

Second Star Youth Theatre recognises that performance environments can be physically and emotionally demanding.

We are committed to fostering a supportive environment where participants feel safe, respected and encouraged.

Participants are encouraged to:

  • communicate if they feel overwhelmed or distressed

  • take short breaks when needed

  • seek support from staff if they are struggling

We recognise that stage performance can create feelings of nervousness or anxiety and aim to support participants in building confidence in a positive and encouraging environment.

Where a participant is experiencing significant distress or behavioural challenges that impact their wellbeing or the safety of others, parents/guardians may be contacted to discuss appropriate support.

12. Allergy-Aware Environment

While we cannot guarantee allergen-free environments, we encourage awareness and cooperation to minimise risks.

Parents/guardians should notify us of severe allergies and provide relevant action plans where required.

13. Emergency Contact Information

Parents/guardians must ensure emergency contact details remain current.

In an emergency, we will contact parents/guardians as soon as practicable.

Performers who are 18 and do not require a parent/guardian to be the main customer must still provide an emergency contact.
