Inclusion & Diversity Statement
Second Star Youth Theatre is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful and supportive environment where young performers of all backgrounds and abilities feel welcomed, valued and empowered.
Our programs are built on the belief that theatre is for everyone. In the majority of our programs, all participants who register and commit to the experience are cast. While some specialised productions may involve competitive entry, we champion community over competition and prioritise ensemble collaboration, skill development and confidence-building for all participants.
We welcome participants across the full spectrum of experience and ability — from those taking their first steps on stage to those seeking professional-standard training. We are committed to challenging and supporting each performer at an appropriate level.
Access and Reasonable Adjustments
We are committed to making reasonable adjustments to support participation wherever practicable, including:
-
Delivering programs in wheelchair-accessible venues
-
Modifying choreography, staging or rehearsal approaches where appropriate
-
Supporting neurodivergent participants
-
Respecting cultural, religious and gender diversity
-
Providing an LGBTQIA+ safe and affirming environment
We recognise that every participant has unique needs. We encourage open communication from parents and guardians regarding access requirements so we can work collaboratively to support each child.
Adjustments are made with consideration to the overall safety, structure and integrity of the program and the experience of all participants. Participation is subject to safety requirements and our organisational policies.
Program Expectations
Our programs are intensive and require a willingness to participate actively and respectfully in all aspects of rehearsals and performance.
While medical or personal information is not required to be disclosed, we are best able to provide appropriate support when relevant information is shared in advance. Participation may be declined or discontinued where safety or wellbeing cannot be reasonably assured.
Casting Philosophy
Casting decisions are made at the discretion of the professional creative team, based on suitability for role and the overall needs of the production.
We are committed to ensuring that all cast members are meaningfully involved in the rehearsal and performance process. We prioritise reliability, collaboration, effort and positive contribution to the ensemble alongside performance skills. For majority of our programs, all who audition will be cast. Where a program does have limited places and the cast is selected by audition, this is made clear from registration.
Our Commitment
Second Star Youth Theatre does not tolerate discrimination, harassment or exclusionary behaviour of any kind.
We are committed to maintaining an environment where young people feel safe, respected and supported to grow as performers and individuals.
